Here's one for the gamers out there. Following in the footsteps of
Nintendo, Sony is set to branch into smartphone apps by bringing in PlayStation
games to Android and IOS devices, making them the latest console game company
to make the shift.
As earlier stated, Sony's rival Nintendo were the first console game
company to create a smartphone app called Miitomo and
was first released in Nintendo's home
market of Japan on March 17, 2016 and later released worldwide
on March 31, 2016. Miitomo isn't the typical game gamers
worldwide have to know, it's more like a social experience such that the
app asks users questions about themselves, and then shares those answers with
friends.
According to a report on CNN Money, Sony has announced that it will form a subsidiary called
ForwardWorks to develop games for IOS and Android devices in Asia.
Sony (SNE) appears to be taking a different route. The
company said it will offer "full-fledged game titles" and use
existing PlayStation games and characters in new apps.
It should be
pointed out that this isn't Sony's first attempt at launching a smartphone
gaming experience. In 2012, the company launched PlayStation Mobile in an
attempt to bring Android smartphone games to its dedicated handheld console,
the PlayStation Vita. Sony has also promoted a range of Android smartphones
with "PlayStation Certified" branding, including a handset from Sony
Ericsson with a PlayStation-style controller. But PlayStation Mobile failed to
catch on, and few titles were released for the service. The "PlayStation
Certified" branding also flopped, and Vita has failed to find commercial
success (CNN Money)
